Making Cygnet safer and easier to get around
Huon Valley Council, with $5 million in funding from the Tasmanian Government, is delivering a package of safety and accessibility improvements in Cygnet township.
The designs cover the Lymington Road widening, Mary Street carpark extension, on-street disability parking, centreline shifting, and additional wombat crossings—all aimed at improving parking, traffic flow, pedestrian safety, and accessibility in Cygnet.
Why are we doing this?
Cygnet is a busy and much-loved town. These improvements will help by:
- Reducing traffic build-up through town
- Making it safer and easier to walk around
- Improve parking — including for people with a disability
- Add EV charging options
- Giving trucks a bit more space to drive through town
The Cygnet Township Safety Upgrade Program and Mary Street upgrades have been shaped by, and directly contribute to, the broader Cygnet Structure Plan. They deliver short and medium-term safety priorities now, while the Structure Plan and its supporting planning tools which will guide longer-term road and footpath infrastructure as Cygnet grows, ensuring future development supports a liveable township.
The Cygnet Township Safety Upgrade Project is supported by the Tasmanian Government through the Department of State Growth and the overall program is expected to be completed by 2028.
Key elements
- Lymington Road widening – A 480-metre section between the footbridge and the Cannery will be widened to allow a centreline to be marked, improving safety and clarity for all road users.
- New wombat crossings – Additional crossings in front of the old post office at Golden Valley Rd and at Red Velvet Lounge will complement the existing Town Hall crossing and 40km speed limit, making the town centre safer for pedestrians.
- Accessible parking bays – New on-street spaces with no kerb drop will improve accessibility for mobility-impaired visitors at intervals along Mary Street.
- Mary Street centreline realignment – Relocated to better accommodate safe passing of large vehicles.
- Town Hall carpark extension – this will create all-day parking with over 100 new spaces, additional accessible spaces and provision for increased EV charging spaces.
- Mary Street carpark – a new access road and carpark next to the BP and the proposed ambulance station will also provide off-street parking, accessible EV charging points, all conveniently located opposite a bus stop.
