Located at the strategic crossing point of the Huon River, Huonville developed as a transport and supply hub connecting the valley's settlements. Today it continues this role, housing key government agencies, health services, businesses, and major sporting precincts that support the broader region.

As the valley's most populous town, Huonville accommodates both long-term residents and newcomers while maintaining its practical focus as the area's working centre. The town's layout reflects its service function - centred around essential infrastructure, educational facilities, sporting grounds, and transport links that keep the valley connected and functioning.
