The Department of State Growth is inviting residents to attend drop-in community consultation sessions to review and provide feedback on draft concept designs for improvements to the Mountain River Road intersection. These sessions aim to gather input on different options to improve safety for all road users.
What is planned for this intersection?
The Tasmanian Government has committed $3 million to address concerns for pedestrian and bus stop safety at the intersection of the Huon Highway and Mountain River Road. We also have $40 million from the Australian Government for upgrades along the Huon Highway corridor more broadly, some of which could also be used for this intersection.
Late last year we engaged a consultant who has reviewed the intersection and has begun developing concept designs for different options to improve safety for all road users, with nothing off the table.
We are looking at many options and then will work out what will be the most effective solution for this location to improve safety.
We lowered the speed limit at this location on 28 March 2025. The department has committed to a review of the speed limit on the Huon Highway corridor following the project's completion.
We are fast-tracking the design and construction of this project to get the intersection upgraded as soon as possible.
